Getting unstuck

By Chris Henderson

Sometimes the body (apparently) acts totally opposite to what the mind has decided.

This happened today to me. I watched it happen.

Now to consider the repercussions.

First though, some context.

Background

I'm a courage catalyst. I work with women who are up for being ustoppable - on their own terms. I'm good at doing that - and at living those values in my own life. I'm also good at communicating directly, and writing programs and resources. I love ideas and finding new/deeper ways to consider an issue.

However to produce even a short considered piece of writing for public consumption - within a timeframe that allows other work to continue - I find challenging as writing takes me a seemingly very long time and usually becomes more complex than first intended, and is often shelved before completion. Hence I avoid writing blog posts, newsletters, mass emails, almost ANY marketing in fact. Avoid it like the plague, you might say.

Not surprisingly, my awareness raising and connecting with broader communities women who'd love what I have to offer....suffers greatly as a result. (A topic for another post - maaaybe.)

This afternoon I briefly pondered whether to complete a draft blog post I came across that had been languishing from a few months ago. The post (included below) seeks to express my desolation and abhorrence I felt about what the Australian Government and the Queensland Government is each doing on so many fronts.

CAMPBELL NEWMAN. TONY ABBOTT.

STOP THIS!

NOT IN MY NAME.
NOT IN OUR COUNTRY'S NAME.

NOT IN ANYONE'S NAME.

STOP. NOW.

Half an hour ago I'd looked at the post and decided NOT TO PUBLISH.

There are a good few reasons why I wouldn't post it.
  • We each always have choice in how we choose to be in the face of circumstances.
  • I believe in being part of the solution, not only criticising the day.

  • There are also three fine reasons why this slip of the hand is perfectly timed.

1. In Queensland we're about to have a Government election and I want to assist a change. This Premier and his government has been responsible for so much decimation to critical services for those less fortunate, to jobs and employment, to the environment including mining the Great Barrier Reef, and to wildlife. His Environment Minister, on World Endangered Species Day, allowed councils to shoot and decimate bat populations that are already diminshed - including a threatened species. The Environment Minister. Go figure. And that's just the start.

2. Abbott's Australian Government is similarly wreaking horrendous havoc within the country as he breaks hundreds of promises and dismantles important structures for the socially disadvantaged and others - and for refugee and asylum seeker populations from overseas. Oh, and he's the Minister for Women who exhibits values and beliefs from centuries ago in relation to the roles and capacities of women. Sexist, bigoted and much more.

3.  Late last night I saw the invitation from Seth Godin's team member Kao to join a Blog Challenge of one post a day for a week. A challenge that scares and excites me and which I clearly need.

So here i am in Australia writing on Tuesday evening. I've spent so long on the lead-in section, the post won't be submitted in time. However I know I've already won.

The challenge is to write about significant things, hard stuff, not simply facts. Well, I'm okay on that count.

So I'm choosing vulnerability, sharing and liberation as I send this off before I'm comfortable with it.

And in summary in relation to Campbell Newman.

IN SO MANY WAYS WE NEED THIS GOVERNMENT OUT. IN QUEENSLAND AND AUSTRALIA.

IN QUEENSLAND, WE CAN THIS MONTH VOTE THE CAMPBELL NEWMAN GOVERNMENT OUT.

Nourishment for the spirit and more

Well, we thought our December Women Howling at the Moon would be a fun, life-giving way to celebrate the year, and it surely was. A delight of a night in fact, with much loving, laughing and stories of bravery and vulnerability and visions for the future.

Thanks to SA artist and women's activist Carol Omer's 'Big Girls Colouring Book (find on FB or the web),  these fun mandalas with their affirmative messages provided the catalyst for deep thoughtful conversations as well as colourful artworks to take home. And of course the company was the best.

Brisbane's Three Bowls Cafe was our gorgeously quirky, creative, relaxed venue, and gosh we were well looked after once again.

Our hosts Mo and Robyn, themselves strong supporters of social justice and environmental issues, don't open at night, however they do for us, so we
have the cafe to ourselves. This is perfect for sharing authentically, hearing each other - and even for the occasional howl if we wish.

And thank you everyone for your fabulous feedback and for being who you are. Sending much love to all.

(Note - Three Bowls is a Buddhist cafe in Gloucester St, Highgate Hill. It's a relatively new addition to the Brisbane scene, with an interesting approach and menu. Google them to find lots of rave views. Great for coffee as well as meals)

Next Women Howling

The next Women Howling at the Moon will be on Wednesday 4 February at this same cafe.

Women Howling at the Moon is a community of inspiring sisters who share a deep commitment to creating a positive difference for themselves and the planet through their business, professional and personal lives - and to support other women in doing the same.

The group meets monthly to connect, network, seek new contacts and solutions and share a guided critical reflection into what moves and sustains us. Click to learn more about the Women Howling at the Moon community, and to find out about our next event.

Members of the community have this to say:
Picture
Elina Juusola-Halonen. Feminist author, Researcher, Independent Business Consultant:

Women Howling to the Moon brings you back your woman spirit. Where else would you meet other women who do not only talk about changing the world but take furious action towards reaching for their goals. I love Women Howling to the Moon and would not miss it for anything.

Lianne Cook
Artist; Principal, Renaissance Kids school art programs:

"Working women get BUSY. Yep we still have families and responsibilities and generally forget to nurture ourselves. Committing once a month to hang out with inspirational and fun women is a great way to give yourself some balance. I learnt so much and felt nurtured and not so "alone" on the trip. Get along to this month's meeting and you will be hooked."

Picture
Zohl de Ishtar, Author; CEO, Kapululangu Women's Law and Culture Centre, Balgo, Western Australia:
Howling at the Moon is an uplifting in-the-midst-of-inspirational-women moment in life just for me when I'm able to skype in to join the evening all the way from the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia. Living out here with the Women Elders of the Kapululangu Women's Law and Culture Centre is an immense privilege in all its dynamic diversity but, just sometimes, I ache for a moment communing with the Moon and those wonderful courageous women.
More feedback
